Skin

Skin, a 22 year old artist from Dorking was born Liam Connor Roberts. Skin is his "tag", or the name he signs his pieces with. He owns an illustration company called "Roll up on four".

What inspires you?

The things that inspire me is just looking at other people's work and just thinking I wish I was that good so I practice and practice a lot of natural colours inspire me too and random patterns I see either on building or on cards just day to day things.

What led to the name Skin?

I got the name 'skin' because when I was younger a lot of people used to say I was just all skin and bone I used to write 'bone' as well but I like the letters better for skin.

How is your work different than that of others?

I wouldn't say my work is a lot different from other writers but I would say I like to do a lot of different styles as in I don't do the same style twice in a row

When did you start doing graffiti?

I started doing graffiti as a kid around 15 years old just in my school books but didn't actually start going out on streets until I was around 17. After 2 years or so I just went to do legal walls and canvas.

What led you to it?

I think I got into graffiti because no one else did it that I know and I was always a artistic kid so it just carried over from that. I like people to have a nice day most of the time so I use a lot of colours so my work is just appealing to the eye. To an untrained eye, which is most people when it comes to graffiti, they cant read it. It may seem like random squiggles to them.

What message does your work convey?

I would say being a graffiti writter is feasible career choice for me as I want to be a tattooist but it definitely is a good choice for some people graffiti is more of another material for me.

Is being a graffiti writer a feasible career choice?

I have made money out of my work, not a lot I might add, people don't tend to want to buy an 8x8 canvas or even a 3x3. I sell more of my illustration work and tattoo designs because they're a lot smaller and cheaper.

What are the highs and the lows?

For me the highs come a lot more then the lows because I don't like to think of things as low points there just a bit annoying but the highs are when it's a few friends alongside each other, there's music and the sun's out also when you finish a piece and you start taking pictures and you're actually happy with the piece you did that day the lows are when you run out of paint of one colour or in winter and when it's cold and rainy.

Whose work inspires you the most?

The thing that inspires me the most is just looking at other people's work and looking at new techniques but when I get stuck in a way of working I normally stay with that method for a year or so.
